How does visitor consent tracking work in Nabu TikTok Pixel App?

Nabu TikTok Pixel always follows your store's customer privacy settings, so TikTok only gets tracking data from shoppers who allow marketing.

Visitor consent tracking is now always on for every store, on every plan, including the free plan. There is no setting to enable, and it cannot be turned off. This helps your store follow Shopify's customer privacy rules and privacy laws such as GDPR.

What happens for each shopper?

  • Shopper allows marketing: your TikTok events (Page View, Add to Cart, Initiate Checkout and Purchase) are sent as usual.
  • Shopper does not allow marketing: no TikTok events, no ad cookies and no personal data are sent to TikTok.
  • Shopper accepts later during the visit: nothing is sent before they accept. After they accept, the events from the page they are on are sent to TikTok.

Where can I see this setting in the app?

  1. Open the Nabu TikTok Pixel app in your Shopify store.
  2. Go to Settings > TikTok Integration > Customer Privacy. You will see the message We follow your store's customer privacy settings. There is nothing to configure here.

Note: This page was earlier called Visitor Consent Tracking and needed the Advanced plan. It is now free for everyone.

  1. If your store ships to the EU or the UK, Shopify may show an Update data access popup asking for access to Privacy settings. Click Update. This lets our app check if your store has a cookie banner and warn you if it does not.

Shoppers give consent through your store's cookie banner. If you sell to the EU or the UK without a cookie banner, shoppers there cannot allow marketing, so TikTok will not get their events.

  1. In Shopify Admin, go to Settings > Customer privacy.
  2. Click Cookie banner and make sure it is turned on for the countries you sell to.

You can also use a third-party cookie banner app, as long as it shares consent with Shopify.

  1. Open your store in a private (incognito) browser window from a country where your cookie banner is shown. You can use a VPN for this.
  2. Decline the cookie banner and browse a few pages. Use the TikTok Pixel Helper Chrome extension to check that no TikTok events are sent.
  3. Open a new private window, accept the cookie banner and browse again. TikTok events should now be sent.

Will I see fewer conversions in TikTok?

If many of your shoppers are in the EU or the UK and decline cookies, TikTok may report fewer events. This is expected, and it is what privacy laws require.

That's all. We take care of the rest.
